He states, "I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies," expressing his desire to create a film that will appeal to both ardent fans and MCU novices equally.
With so many movies and TV shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it can be intimidating for a newbie to even consider trying to catch up with all of the characters and plots.
However, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy claims there won't be any "homework" necessary to enjoy his movie.
"I did well academically in school. As a grownup, I'll complete my schoolwork. However, Levy told the Associated Press, "I am most definitely not going to the movies looking to do homework."He went on to say that while making a film that everyone could enjoy, his main objective was to appease the film's devoted following.
"I made this film with a great deal of respect and gratitude for the fervent fan base that is extremely knowledgeable about the mythology and lore of these characters and this world," the director stated. Nevertheless, I didn't want to assume that. There is no requirement to watch this film beforehand; it is meant to be enjoyed.
For the first time since 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine reconnect on screen in this film. (Levy, who helmed Reynolds in 2021's Free Guy and Jackman in 2011's Real Steel, is also making a comeback with the actors.)
Since then, Jackman’s character (warning: 7-year-old spoiler alert ahead!) died in 2017’s Logan. But the folks behind Deadpool & Wolverine say that the new film won’t pose a conflict with the MCU canon or the character’s continuity.
“It’s a really interesting duo,” Levy told the AP. “They’re built for huge conflict with each other because they’re so different individually. But that makes for a very interesting story, because the best two hander stories, whether it’s Midnight Run or 48 Hours or Planes, Trains and Automobiles, yes, it’s littered with conflict. But it’s ultimately about something more as well and that’s what audiences will see.”
Although Levy acknowledged the degree of secrecy and unverified speculations, such as those speculating about a Taylor Swift cameo, he is withholding some information about the movie.
Levy acknowledged that "the rumors surrounding this movie are overwhelming," but he advised viewers to settle in and enjoy: "I think they're in for a very fun ride," he added, adding that "the movie is built for audience delight."
On July 26, Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theaters.
